Depression Q & A

What is depression?

While everyone feels sad occasionally, depression is like a dark cloud that surrounds you, isolating you from friends, family, previously enjoyed activities, and your sense of self.

Depression interferes with thoughts and emotions, as well as the way you function in your day-to-day life.

Depression lasts longer than sadness or grief, with symptoms persisting for months or even years when left untreated. Dr. Liner has helped many clients who have lived with depression for years without ever identifying it or seeking help. Fortunately, it’s never too late to seek help.

When should I talk to a psychologist about depression?

Depression causes a variety of distressing mental, emotional, and physical symptoms. Some of the signs that you have depression and need to talk to Dr. Liner include:

  • Feeling hopeless, worthless, or overwhelmingly sad
  • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Increased social isolation
  • Increased irritability and mood swings
  • Low energy and fatigue
  • Libido loss
  • Reduced concentration
  • Unexplained tearfulness
  • Changes in appetite
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Never feeling excited or enthusiastic about anything

Depression can also cause thoughts of self-harm, death, and suicide. If you’re thinking about hurting yourself or committing suicide, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room for immediate assistance.
